it’s Texas MR2 Annual Meet time again!

We've got a great day set up for y'all. First, we'll kick things off with a pre-meet at Deussen Park, a scenic spot on Lake Houston just northeast of the city. Grab your coffee on the way and show up as early as you like and hang out with the early birds until we roll out around 11.

From there it's a short cruise down to The Food Zone, where we'll grab lunch and hang out for a few hours — plenty of time to walk the lot, talk shop, and check out everyone's cars, and have lunch I guess.

Then we'll head over to SpeedSportz for the December Track Casual event. No racing, no pressure, no lap times — just a chance to really feel your car out and have some fun where you wont be charged for reckless endangerment.

GrannyShifters.com is now going to sponsor 2 contests. First is a Peoples Choice Contest. You'll be given a number to put in your car and a ballot. People will vote for the car they like the most. Modified, stock or just pulled out of the river. Whatever tickles your fancy! You just can't vote for your own car.

Next we will be collecting names and ZIP codes of where you drove in from. Using the power of computers and API keys we will be using that to figure out who the winner of the second contest is. If that comes back to a tie we will have a google maps-off.

A few things about Track Casual for the Annual Meet:

If you’ve never driven a car on a track but always wanted to, this event is perfect for you. The laps are short, they are not timed, and there’s even a dedicated slow/passing zone. It’s very laid back and everyone is there to just have fun. It’s not a competition, but you still get to push your car and see what it can do closer to its limits in a safe environment.

Depending on the number of drivers, we will get split into a number of run groups (usually two to three) based on experience level.

All cars that will go on track must pass a basic tech inspection. The host will check for the following: tire condition, fluid leaks, seat belts, and a secured battery. Cars that do not pass tech will not be allowed on the track. The most common one I’ve seen be an issue is a lack of battery tie-down. Aside from that, as long as your car can drive there without feeling sketchy and making weird suspension noises, you should be fine. It would be smart to get some fresh DOT4 brake fluid in to avoid a squishy brake pedal.

You may have noticed that the venue, SpeedSportz, is a go-kart track. They actually have two tracks; the rental kart track and the Pro Track. Track Casual is a monthly event that utilizes the Pro Track. It is just wide enough for most passenger vehicles, and suits all three generations of MR2 fairly well. It isn’t a high speed course and it somewhat resembles an autocross course, just without all the slaloms and with a straight where you can briefly get into third gear.

Drivers and passengers are required to wear helmets. It doesn’t have to be the newest carbon fiber full face helmet, but it can’t just be a Bell bicycle helmet from Walmart. If you don’t have one or can’t buy one, SpeedSportz offers rental helmets. I’m unsure of the price as I’ve been told one number and ended up paying a different number (for a passenger). All I can say is have between $2 to $25 ready for it.

Lastly, the price is $150 per driver and paid only at the gate. Considering the amount of seat time you get, that’s a steal.
